So You Think You Can Dance?
In Term 2 the Kahikatea Syndicate held a 'So You Think You Can Dance?' competition. For the month leading up to the big day Room 12's afternoons were filled with the sweet sounds
of Jay Williams, creative differences over choreography and honing those slick moves.
While there was some fierce competition for the honorof representing Room 12 in the final showdown it was Ella, Brittney, Tayla and Phoebe who took out the class prize.
On Friday they strutted their stuff (Complete with matching outfits AND glittery hats) in front of Kahikatea in the hall. Unfortunately it wasn't our turn to win but what a great experience ( Allegations of judges being bribed with
chocolate fish are still being investigated).
Trees For Survival
Room 12 has been lucky enough to have the opportunity to be
programme run by the TFS charitable trust - we help them by planting trees in areas that have been identified as needing replanting. We also help out by weeding and watering the native seedlings that we plant. So far
this year we have had two sessions on plant care with Warren Field, one planting at Henley Lake and this
week we are planting the stream area behind the
school swimming pool.
Our trip to Henley Lake was nearly a disaster as there
was torrential rain all morning, but luckily
the sun came out just as we jumped on the bus
(Many thanks to the Edmond's family for providing all
the extra jackets just in case!). Everyone worked
hard to plant nearly 200 seedlings, what a gargantuan
effort for one afternoon! We returned home on the bus
wet, tired but feeling the satisfaction of a job well done!

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Our teacher reading book for this term is Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. The Lightning Thief is a 2005 fantasy/adventure novel based on Greek mythology, the first young adult novel written by author Rick Riordan. It is the first book in the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, which charts the adventures of modern twelve-year-old Percy Jackson as he discovers he is a demigod, the son of a mortal woman and the Greek god Poseidon. Percy and his friends go on a quest to prevent an apocalyptic war between the Greek gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades.
Room 12 enjoys listening to Miss Logan read Percy Jackson and many of the students in Room 12 like to have a turn reading to the class as well. Reading Percy Jackson helps us to practice using our reading strategies; we love to try and predict what will happen next! Many of the students in Room 12 have also been using Douglas Park's wonderful library to find out more about the mythological characters mentioned in the story!
Here is some more information about Percy Jackson and how it helps students to learn:

Room 12 Superstars
Room 12 Wins the Kahikatea Shield!
Wow Room 12 what an amazing start to 2010! During the week 2 celebration time Room 12 were awarded the Kahikatea Shield for making great choices and showing P.R.I.D.E in their learning and behaviour. Mr McClean stated that he chose Room 12 as he is a " straight lines man" and loved the way he had seen Room 12 walking around D.P.S during the week. Well done!
